Microsoft released v3 D series VMs in limited number of Azure Regions

By Rob Waggoner

Last month, Microsoft announced general availability of the Dv3 and Ev3 Virtual Machines. Read more about the announcement here. These new sizes provide increased performance at a lower cost. The Dv3 sizes will be up to 28% lower in cost than the Dv2 versions, and the Dv3 VMs will be based on the Intel® Broadwell E5-2673 v4 2.3GHz and the Intel® Haswell 2.4 GHz E5-2673 v3 processors.

Geographic Availability and SKUs of the new Dv3 and Ev3 VM sizes

As of today, there are only a few Azure Regions that currently support the Dv3 and Ev3 SKUs, but for those Azure Regions that do not support the Dv3 & Ev3 SKUs yet, the Dv2_Promo SKUs will remain until the v3 SKUs are in place. We recently announced these Promo SKUs. You can read more about the announcement here, They are less expensive than the Dv2 SKUs. The Dv3 announcement also included the Promo price reduction will remain in place until 6/30/2018.  However, at that point, the pricing will revert to regular Dv2 pricing, so you need to remember to update them to the new Dv3 SKU’s.

You can check here to see if your Azure Region has the Dv3 & Ev3 SKUs. Even if your Azure Region does not have the Dv3 & Ev3 SKUs, leveraging the Promo SKUs for your D2 and above VMs will save on your Azure runtime cost, while providing the same or better VM performance.

How to Resize Your Virtual Machines

Thanks to our seamless integration with Microsoft Azure services, you will be able to resize your VMs to the Dv2 Promo right within the MyCloudIT platform.

From a selected deployment, go to Virtual Machines and edit existing VMs.

When you want to resize any existing VM, our portal displays the available sizes to change directly from Azure. The list is already filtered based on the storage account type to automatically pick the best option when switching from one tier to another. Thus, you can quickly resize your existing VMs to any available Dv3 VM.

Note: Please remember that once you press Submit to change the size of your VM, your VM will be taken offline until the resize operation is complete. Therefore, you will need to resize your VM outside of your business hours. Also note, since these SKUs are new, they may not show up in the list of available sizes yet due to the limited availability of the hardware.

If you have any questions about resizing VMs, just send us an email at support@mycloudit.com. We look forward to assisting you!
