By Thao Duong

Microsoft is offering a limited-time discount on its Dv2 series instances in preparation for the launch of Dv3 - its new Hyper-Threading Technology virtual machines (VM) for general purpose workloads.  Starting today, you can provision a Dv2 Promo VM in your current deployment at the lower Dv3 VM prices, allowing you to take advantage of the cost savings from now until the launch of the Dv3 later this year.

We’ve compiled the following chart for your savings estimation:

Instance Size Difference Promo Discount
D2v2 $0.037 14.23%
D3v2 $0.076 14.62%
D4v2 $0.150 14.42%

Dv2 Promo Pricing Compared with Standard Pricing

We encourage you to resize your current VMs to the Dv2 Promo to take advantage of the cost savings.

How to Resize Your Virtual Machines

Thanks to our seamless integration with Microsoft Azure services, you will be able to resize your VMs to the Dv2 Promo right within the MyCloudIT platform.

From a selected deployment, go to Virtual Machines and edit existing VMs.

When you want to resize any existing VM, our portal displays the available sizes to change directly from Azure. The list is already filtered based on the storage account type to automatically pick the best option when switching from one tier to another. Thus, you can quickly resize your existing VMs to any available Dv2 Promo options.

Note: Please remember that once you press Submit to change the size of your VM, your VM will be taken offline until the resize operation is complete. Therefore, you will need to resize your VM outside of your business hours.

About DV2 Series

Dv2-series instances are the latest generation of D-series instances that will carry more powerful CPUs which are on average about 35% faster than D-series instances, and carry the same memory and disk configurations as the D-series. Dv2-series instances are based on the latest generation 2.4 GHz Intel Xeon® E5-2673 v3 (Haswell) processor, and with Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0 can go to 3.2 GHz.

Dv2-series are ideal for applications that demand faster CPUs, better local disk performance, or higher memories. The Dv2 VMs offer a powerful combination for many enterprise-grade applications.

New Hyper-threaded Dv3 Series

As Microsoft Azure continues to make its prices comparable with AWS, they recently announced a new generation of Hyper-Threaded virtual machines, Dv3, that are up to 28% lower in prices than the current generation.

This new generation will introduce sizes with 64 vCPUs on Intel® Broadwell E5-2673 v4 2.3 processor and with 432 GiB of memory on the largest Ev3 sizes. By unlocking more power from the underlying hardware, Dv3 VMs will provide better performance and efficiency, resulting in cost savings that you can receive from hosting RDS in Azure.

So, while we're waiting for the release of the Dv3 series, don't forget to take advantage of the early cost savings by switching your current VMs to the Dv2 Promo series.
